Ebony spleenwort is an upright growing fern that resembles a miniature Christmas fern. It usually is not much taller than 12 inches. It likes well-drained soil and usually grows on north or east facing slopes. Like most ferns, it remains green all season long and will have some foliage into winter Like most of the native woodland ferns it is easy to grow and long-lived.
