Dogtooth violet is not violet but a true lily. The name comes from the shape of the bulb which resembles a dogs tooth. This is one of the earliest wildflowers, blooming in March here in Missouri. The single bloom forms a seed pod and the plants will self sow in time to increase their number.

A good companion to dutchmen's breeches and gold star grass.
